Tribal Elections Scheduled For Rosebud
By Vi Waln
ROSEBUD – The Election Board has finalized the dates for 3 elections, scheduled to be held over the next 4 months, to fill 13 open positions in the Rosebud Sioux Tribal government.
First, a special election will be held on Thursday, May 25. Nominating affidavits are available this week in the Tribal Secretary’s office. The closing date to file an affidavit for the special election is May 5.
This special election will fill the unexpired term of the Ring Thunder tribal council representative. The successful candidate will serve just over 1 year in this term. The vacancy was created when the tribal council removed representative Patti Douville in March.
In addition, nominating affidavits will be available on May 1 to fill 10 tribal council representative seats. Representatives will serve a 3-year term. Affidavits will also be accepted for a Tribal Treasurer and Tribal Secretary, both to be elected to a 2-year term.
Prospective candidates must meet all eligibility requirements outlined in the RST Election Code, including age and residency rules, to be placed on the ballot. A filing fee must accompany all nominating affidavits. A money order for $150 for tribal council and a $300 money order for constitutional officer positions must be paid at the time the affidavit is filed. Candidates must pass a criminal background check.
A primary election will be held on July 27. The top vote getters will advance to the general election on August 24. The Tribal Treasurer, Tribal Secretary, along with Tribal council representatives from Black Pipe, Butte Creek, Grass Mountain, Ideal, Milks Camp, Okreek, Parmelee, Soldier Creek, Spring Creek and Two Strike, will be sworn in on the next business day following the certification of the general election.
Election Board members are Ronald Neiss, Tonia Marshall, Myrtle Lafferty, Bernadette Oliver and Angie Fast Horse. If you need information, please call (605) 856-2373.
