Candidates advance to general election
July 29, 2017
ROSEBUD – Candidates who will advance to the Rosebud Sioux Tribal General Election, scheduled for later this month, were chosen by voters during last week’s Primary Election.
Results from the Primary Election at Rosebud, which have not been certified, narrowed the number of tribal council candidates from 36 to 20. A challenge period will end on Friday, August 4. Tribal voters who wish to challenge any candidate or aspect of the Primary Election, must do so in writing. A filing fee of $50 must be paid to the Tribal Treasurer and the receipt must accompany your challenge.
2,041 registered voters at Rosebud cast ballots in the July 27 election. There are approximately 7,000 tribal citizens on the voter registration list. The top 2 vote getters in the 7 communities on the Primary Election ballot were: Butte Creek: C. Steve Brave and Paul Joseph. Ideal: Gabriel Medicine Eagle and Shizue M. LaPointe. Okreek: Steven L. DeNoyer and Wayne W. Frederick. Parmelee: Eileen Shot and Brian K. Dillon. Spring Creek: Pamela J. Kills In Water and Lila Kills In Sight. Soldier Creek: Kathleen Wooden Knife and Dennis Charlie Spotted Tail. Two Strike: Richard “Smokey” Whipple and Ben Black Bear III.
Candidates from 3 communities did not appear on the Primary Election ballot. Since there were only 2 candidates for these positions, they automatically advanced to the General Election. They included (for tribal council representative) Blackpipe: Russell Eagle Bear and William Morrison. Grass Mountain: Rita Means and Vanessa M. Red Hawk Thompson. Milks Camp: Byron Andrews and Alfred Old Lodge. Also advancing to the General Election are tribal secretary candidates Martina “Teema” LaDeaux and Linda Marshall.
Louis Wayne Boyd will likely remain as Tribal Treasurer since he was the lone candidate to file for that position.
Rose Stenstrom was elected to represent Ring Thunder on the tribal council. The position has been vacant since March. No newcomer to the tribal council, she served a 3-year term (2012-2015) as the Ring Thunder representative. She will be sworn in after the mandated challenge period ends. Other candidates on the Special Election ballot from Ring Thunder included Raine K. Eagle Cloud and Shane Red Hawk.
Polling locations will be open to voters from 8:00am to 7:00pm on Thursday, August 24, 2017. Voters may cast their ballot in their community of residence. Polls will be located at the following community buildings: Antelope, Blackpipe, Bull Creek, Butte Creek, Corn Creek, Grass Mountain, He Dog, Horse Creek, Ideal North, Ideal South, Milks Camp, Okreek, Parmelee, Ring Thunder, Rosebud, Soldier Creek, Spring Creek, St. Francis, Swift Bear, Two Strike and Upper Cut Meat.
