The Sicangu Oyate
Keya Wakpala Waicageyapi represents the commitment of a dedicated, resilient people who not only continue to persist against all odds, but are actively seeking new, vibrant expressions of cultural and spiritual values today. Our community is guides by Wolakota, our teachings of respect and integrity, honesty, humility, Wicozani, Wokiye, Woksape, perseverance and leadership, wisdom, love and compassion, generosity, and Womaskanskan, acknowledgment of the spiritual connection between all parts of Creation.
These cultural principles are the foundation of the values of the Sicangu Oyate, which have been identified as preserving and relearning cultural traditions and language.
These values, guided by our strong commitment and responsibility to the long term health of our Tiwahe and Tiospaye family units, create a people highly capable and committed to the development of a new thriving, resilient community founded on Lakota values and culture.
Key aspects to the future vitality of Keya Wakpa Waicageyapi were determined within our community visioning meetings. These include:
A Stakeholder's Group with an Executive Committee will meet regularly, offering advice, knowledge, guidance, and approvals during the process of development. These will be comprised of Lakota citizen stakeholders, and will ensure the participation of Lakota people with particular knowledge and expertise in our key aspect areas.
